The world of art knows no boundaries, a testament to the universal language of creativity and expression that transcends borders, cultures, and political affiliations. A recent and captivating illustration of this global communion can be found in the heart of Rabat, Morocco, at the esteemed Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. Here, an extraordinary exhibition unfolds, showcasing the rich tapestry of Cuban art – a pioneering venture marking one of the first major presentations of its kind on African soil.

This exhibition is not just another art show; it is a dialogue between continents, between histories, and between peoples. When His Majesty King Mohamed VI of Morocco visited Havana back in 2017, a seed was planted by Cuban-American gallery owner Alberto Magnan. He presented the king with an immersive experience into Cuba’s art and culture, highlighting the deep, though often overlooked, connections between Cuban artistic expressions and the African heritage. Now, seven years later, Morocco’s premier museum houses a testament to that shared legacy, bridging gaps and celebrating commonalities.

The Mohammed VI Museum, known for its commendable efforts to diversify the art and culture accessible to the Moroccan public, has now taken a significant leap into exploring Latin American art, specifically Cuban. Abdelaziz El Idrissi, the museum director, emphasized the priority of moving beyond the European-centric art historical narratives that often dominate North African education and public knowledge. Deep down, there’s an eagerness to dive into uncharted artistic waters, and this Cuban art exhibition is a bold stroke in that limitless ocean of artistic exploration.

Among the highlights are 44 pieces by Wifredo Lam, an artist of Afro-Cuban descent whose work not only preempts a major retrospective show slated for New York City’s Museum of Modern Art in 2025 but also resonates deeply with the African identity. This exclusive showcasing of Lam’s work in Morocco is not accidental but a deliberate effort to celebrate the Afro-Cuban identity through vibrant color palettes and African-inspired masks, highlighting a rich shared heritage.

Furthermore, Jose Angel Toirac’s noteworthy contributions add another layer of depth to the exhibition. Known for his satirical portrayals of Fidel Castro within the context of American consumer culture and advertisements, Toirac’s work makes its first international appearance outside of Cuba, challenging perceptions and inviting reflection on Cuba’s complex relationship with capitalism and its iconic revolutionary leader.

The exhibition, titled “Cuban Art: On the other side of the Atlantic,” does not shy away from addressing themes of isolation, economic embargoes, identity, and heritage. It paints a multifaceted picture of Cuban society, where transformations, struggles, and triumphs are reflected through vibrant artistic expressions. The artists’ works serve as conduits, connecting viewers to the heart and soul of Cuban experiences, transcending geographical and political boundaries.

This initiative by Morocco, supported by increased funding for arts and culture, reflects a broader strategy to assert its cultural and geopolitical influence, fostering a nurturing environment for artistic exchange and dialogue. The similarities between Moroccan and Cuban historical trajectories – from decolonization in Morocco to revolution in Cuba – provide a rich backdrop for this artistic meeting, inviting viewers to explore and reflect on the intertwined narratives of two seemingly disparate worlds.

The exhibition, which runs until June 16, not merely showcases art. It is a manifestation of a broader, more profound dialogue between nations and cultures, reiterating the power of art in bridging divides. It’s a celebration of shared histories and common futures, an acknowledgment that despite the vast distances and differences, we are all part of a broader, more interconnected world.
